Acholi Inn Hotel, Gulu: A Colonial-Era Landmark at the Gateway to Northern Uganda
Acholi Inn has been the most recognizable address in Gulu since 1936, when it was commissioned during Uganda’s colonial era. It has outlasted a government parastatal, a privatization, and several rounds of refurbishment, and it remains the default choice for anyone passing through — whether that means NGO workers on a long posting, business travelers moving between Kampala and Juba, or visitors using Gulu as a base for the region’s historical sites.
It is not a boutique property or a design hotel. What it is, consistently, is the most reliable option in Northern Uganda’s largest city, run by staff who are its greatest asset.
Location
The hotel sits in Senior Quarters, an established residential suburb a short distance north of Gulu’s central business district, close to the presidential lodge, the central police station, and the regional immigration center — which makes for a notably secure and calm environment in a city that is still finding its post-conflict footing.
The center of town is around ten minutes on foot. Gulu Airport is fifteen minutes by car. Free on-site parking is available.
The hotel’s position on a main road means access in and out of the city is straightforward — useful if you are using Gulu as a staging point on the Kampala-Juba corridor, which at 333 km and 321 km respectively makes this a logical midpoint stop.
For cultural and historical excursions, Ker Kwaro Acholi — the cultural institution of the Acholi people — and the Independence Monument are both within ten minutes by car. Fort Patiko, also known as Baker’s Fort, a 19th-century site with a sobering history connected to the East African slave trade, is less than an hour’s drive north.
Rooms
The hotel has around 80 rooms and 12 VIP suites, all air-conditioned and equipped with satellite television and 24-hour broadband. Rooms are clean and functional rather than lavish — comfortable beds, mosquito nets, tea and coffee facilities, and a decent shower with reliable hot water. The older wings of the property are more basic in finish, and toiletries beyond soap are not always provided, so it is worth packing your own. That said, the rooms are well maintained and quiet despite the hotel’s size, and the gardens and grounds provide a buffer from the road noise outside.

Food and Drink
The restaurant and bar are a major draw, and not just for hotel residents. The kitchen covers a safe and well-executed range of Western and local dishes — the poolside stir-fry has attracted its own following — and the bar is a social hub for Gulu’s expatriate and NGO community.
Breakfast is included and adequate, though unremarkable. Coffee is expensive by local standards but good quality.
The outdoor dining and bar area does not have air conditioning, which is worth bearing in mind in the hottest months, though the garden setting compensates. Two restaurants are available on site for different moods or group sizes.
Facilities and Service
The swimming pool is large, well-maintained, and popular enough on weekends to be busy. Poolside food and drink service is available, attentive, and well-regarded.
Beyond the pool, facilities include a health club, gymnasium, sauna, steam room, and massage parlor, as well as a main conference room that can accommodate up to 1,000 people, making Acholi Inn the obvious choice for large-scale events and conferences in the region. A lounge, terrace, garden, internet café, car hire, and airport transfers round out the offering.
Service is the thread that runs through almost every positive account of the hotel. Staff across departments — reception, restaurant, poolside — are friendly, hardworking, and genuinely engaged.

Acholi Inn is what Gulu needs it to be: a large, dependable hotel with proper facilities, good food, a great pool, and staff who know how to look after people in a city where the alternatives are limited.
It will not win awards for interior design, but it has been doing its job for nearly ninety years and shows no signs of stopping. Book a newer room if you can, bring your own toiletries, and spend at least one afternoon by the pool.
