Category Ayacucho

Ayacucho is a historic city in south-central Peru, set high in the Andes and known for its colonial architecture and strong artisan traditions. It played an important role in Peruvian independence, especially because the Battle of Ayacucho in 1824 helped secure liberation from Spanish rule. Today, it is often called the “City of Churches” and is also recognized for crafts such as retablos, textiles, pottery, and Huamanga stone carving.
