Harare is the capital and largest city of Zimbabwe, founded as Salisbury in 1890 and renamed Harare after independence in 1980. The city sits on the Highveld plateau at about 1,480 metres elevation and is known for its tree-lined avenues, cultural institutions like the National Gallery, and markets such as Mbare Musika. Harare is Zimbabwe’s administrative and commercial hub but faces rapid urban growth and infrastructure pressures that have increased informal settlement and planning challenges.
