Hotel Bhairon Vilas, Bikaner: A Heritage Haveli in the Heart of Rajasthan
Bhairon Vilas is one of Bikaner’s oldest heritage properties — a haveli built in 1872 as the personal residence of Maharaj Bhairon Singh Ji, cousin and Prime Minister to Maharaja Ganga Singh during Bikaner’s golden age. The building has been in the family ever since, and the current owners still live on the premises.
Today it operates as a heritage hotel of 18 rooms, decorated with the family’s personal collection of antiques, artwork, and period furniture, and it is unlike almost anything else in Rajasthan at its price point. The atmosphere is extraordinary. The service is not always.
Location
The hotel sits close to Bikaner’s city centre, around a five-minute walk from the main market and old city. Junagarh Fort — one of Rajasthan’s finest — is nearby, as are the Laxminath Ji Temple (2 km), Lalgarh Palace (2.3 km), and the Bhandeshwar Jain Temples. The Karni Mata Temple at Deshnok, famous for its sacred rats, is a short drive away, as is the Camel Breeding Farm.
The surrounding streets are busy, gritty, and authentically urban — cows, scooters, and market noise are part of the texture.
Rooms
The hotel offers Deluxe Rooms and Heritage Rooms, all air-conditioned with flat-screen satellite television, free Wi-Fi, minibar, ensuite bathroom, and balcony or sitting area. Period furniture from the family’s personal collection, handcrafted woodwork, vibrant textiles, and original artwork make the rooms feel closer to museum exhibits than standard hotel accommodation.
Room quality varies considerably across the property. Some rooms — particularly the corner suites on upper floors — are spacious, beautifully appointed, and immaculately maintained, with large modern bathrooms and separate living areas. Others are smaller and darker, and housekeeping standards have been inconsistent. It is worth requesting a specific room or at least specifying your preferences at booking; the difference between the best and most basic rooms here is significant.
Food and Drink
The Tamarind Restaurant is one of the property’s highlights — multi-level, elaborately decorated, and serving Rajasthani and international dishes to a standard that regularly exceeds expectations. The restaurant 1488 AD, recently opened within the grounds, has also drawn strong praise. Café Ganesha offers a quieter option for drinks and light snacks. Breakfast is included but simple — eggs, toast, fruit, and Nescafe.
Facilities and Service
The grounds are a destination in themselves: lush gardens with seating areas, fire pits, sculptures, and antiques at every turn. A swimming pool sits within the property, and the bar — once you locate it — is one of the most atmospherically decorated rooms in the hotel. Traditional Rajasthani puppet shows, music performances, and fire dancing can be arranged, and the hotel offers camel safari access to the Thar Desert.
The owner, Harsh, is warm, knowledgeable, and genuinely engaging — meeting him is part of the experience — but the wider staff operation is inconsistent. Information about meal times, prices, and services varies depending on who you ask, the front desk is not always manned, and requests for basics like water and toilet paper have sometimes caused confusion.
