Hotel Cosmos Shimla: A Mall Road Base in the Hills
Established in March 1980, Hotel Cosmos sits on Mall Road in the heart of Shimla — one of the most central addresses in the city, yet surrounded by the kind of quiet, natural atmosphere that makes Shimla worth visiting in the first place. A companion property, Hotel New Cosmos, was added to the same site in 2004.
Together, the two five-storey buildings offer 48 rooms across a budget-friendly, family-oriented setup with a long-running reputation among leisure and business travellers alike.
Location
Mall Road doesn’t get more central than this. The Ridge is a two-minute walk, Scandal Point and Lakkar Bazaar are within a kilometre, and St. Mary’s Church is reachable on foot in under 15 minutes. Jakhu Temple — the scenic mountaintop Hindu temple with its striking 33-meter Hanuman statue — is around 1 km away. The Shimla Heritage Walk and Viceregal Lodge are both within two miles.
The Old ISBT bus station is 850 metres from the hotel. Shimla Airport is approximately 25 kilometres out. Government parking is available 200 metres away.
One honest note: the location and room size are the hotel’s strongest cards — maintenance and amenities have not always kept pace.
Rooms
24 rooms per property, 48 in total. Rooms are notably spacious for the price point — a genuine standout. Each comes with a desk, separate sitting area, television with cable, wardrobe, and an attached bathroom with running hot and cold water. Air conditioning is available.
Basic toiletries and in-room extras (kettles, mineral water, room heaters) are not consistently provided — worth packing your own for a more comfortable stay. The vintage-style architecture has charm, but some renovation would bring the rooms up to expectations.
Restaurant & Dining
A multi-cuisine dining hall serves Indian and Chinese food. Krishna Bakery and Dimsum Chinese Fast Food are both nearby for casual meals out.
Facilities & Service
24-hour front desk, elevator, 24-hour power backup, laundry and dry cleaning, travel desk, doctor on call, open terrace, and EPBAX. Major credit cards accepted. Check-in and check-out are both at 12:00 noon.
Languages spoken include English and Hindi. Staff are courteous.
Pros & Cons
✔ Unbeatable Mall Road location — The Ridge, Scandal Point, and Jakhu Temple all nearby
✔ Exceptionally spacious rooms for the price
✔ Long-established property with good transit and parking access
✔ Multi-cuisine dining on site
✔ Open terrace
✘ Amenities are basic — toiletries and in-room extras often missing
✘ Maintenance and cleanliness need improvement
✘ Staff service can be inconsistent
✘ No pool or leisure facilities
Overall
Hotel Cosmos delivers where it counts most: location and space. Sitting directly on Mall Road, it puts Shimla’s best walking streets, temples, and viewpoints within a few minutes on foot — and the rooms are larger than you’d expect at this price.
The gap is in the details: amenities are thin and upkeep is uneven. Come with realistic expectations, pack a few basics, and it’s a practical and well-placed base for exploring one of India’s most beloved hill stations.
