Hotel Gentile

Hotel Gentile, Noli: A Family-Run Gem in One of Liguria’s Most Beautiful Villages

Hotel Gentile has been welcoming guests in Noli since 1957, and the warmth built up over those decades is the first thing you notice on arrival. Run today by Caterina and Paolo — with their children Stella and Andrea often in the mix — it is a small, unpretentious property a few minutes’ walk from the sea and the edge of Noli’s medieval historic centre. The rooms are simple and the star rating is two, but neither tells the full story.

Location

Noli is one of the most intact medieval villages on the Ligurian coast — four ancient towers still visible above the rooftops, narrow stone alleyways, a Romanesque church dating to the eleventh century, and a small harbour on a sheltered gulf.

The hotel sits just outside the historic centre, with the sea around five minutes on foot and the main landmarks of the old town within easy walking distance. Parking is available nearby on reservation.

The surrounding area offers more than the village itself. The Pilgrim’s Trail connects Noli to Varigotti along five kilometres of coastal path with dramatic views. Saracen Bay and Malpasso Beach are tucked between Capo Noli and Punta Crena, and the gulf offers windsurfing, kitesurfing, diving, and mountain biking for those who want activity alongside the history.

Rooms

The hotel offers single, double, and family rooms across ten configurations, all with private bathroom, complimentary toiletries, hairdryer, flat-screen television, and free Wi-Fi. Rooms are simply furnished — vintage touches alongside modern updates — and immaculately maintained. They are not large, and there is no air conditioning, but they are spotlessly clean, quiet, and well looked after. Mountain and landmark views are available depending on the room.

Food and Drink

Breakfast is one of the hotel’s highlights — a continental buffet that goes well beyond the standard, with homemade tarts, cakes, croissants, focaccia, warm bread, cold cuts, and eggs prepared on request. Coffee and cappuccino are served at the table. It sets the tone for the day and is reason enough to stay in for the morning.

The restaurant is open for dinner to both guests and the public, with a fixed menu that changes seasonally and draws on local Ligurian tradition — pesto, stuffed anchovies, fresh gulf fish, and ingredients sourced from local producers and sustainable fisheries.

Chef Paolo, originally from Sicily, brings a philosophy of minimal waste and maximum freshness to the kitchen. Lunch is a dish of the day, available to eat in or take away. Gluten-free products and soy milk are available for guests with dietary requirements.

Facilities and Service

Beyond the restaurant and breakfast room, the hotel has an outdoor terrace seating area, baggage storage, and private check-in and check-out. The beach is a short walk and water sports equipment rental is available nearby. The hotel can host small celebrations and ceremonies.

Caterina, Paolo, and their team are what make Hotel Gentile exceptional. The hospitality is personal, consistent, and genuine — it feels like staying with family rather than checking into a hotel. Attention to detail in the rooms, the food, and the welcome is the defining quality of Hotel Gentile.
