A clean, comfortable, and well-priced small hotel in the heart of Peru’s most historically significant highland city, Hotel Rivera Ayacucho sits just two blocks from the Plaza de Armas — close enough to the centre that most of what you came to see is on foot.
Location
Two blocks from the Plaza de Armas is as central as it gets in Ayacucho. The surrounding streets are lined with shops and restaurants, and the historic core of the city — colonial churches, markets, and cultural sites — is within easy walking distance in most directions.
One thing to know before you arrive: the hotel is uphill from the plaza, so that two-block walk carries a gradient. At Ayacucho’s altitude of around 2,750 metres (9,022 feet), you may feel it on the first day. There is no elevator, and some rooms are on the upper floors — worth bearing in mind if you are travelling with heavy luggage.
Colonel FAP Alfredo Mendivil Duarte Airport is about a 10-minute drive away; a shuttle can be arranged for an additional fee.
Rooms
Five room types are available: single, double, twin, triple, and a suite. Rooms are carpeted, with a flat-screen TV, private bathroom with shower, desk, and closet. Some double rooms include a balcony with city views. The suite adds a whirlpool bathtub.
Rooms are clean and comfortable. The main caveat is the beds: firm to the point of discomfort for some. Air circulation is limited, and sound travels easily through the building — footsteps in the corridor and on the stairs are audible from the rooms.
Breakfast
Breakfast is included and is a genuine highlight. Daily options span American, continental, and regional Peruvian dishes, with eggs, fresh juice, coffee, and rotating choices each morning. The local bread — chapla, a flat, slightly chewy Andean staple — is served with butter and jam.
Breakfast staff are attentive and the spread is considerably better than the price point might lead you to expect.
