Kings Lodge Motel

Kings Lodge Motel – A Budget Base for Driving LA

Kings Lodge Motel sits in Monterey Park, off the I-10’s Garfield Avenue exit, on Los Angeles’s eastern edge. It’s a family-run property established in 1980, with free on-site parking and hillside lot positioning that makes it easy to find by car.

Location

The freeway access is the motel’s main selling point. Downtown LA is about 10 minutes away, LAX 35 minutes, Universal Studios 25, and Disneyland 30. For a car-based LA trip on a budget, that coverage is hard to beat. The neighbourhood itself — Monterey Park — is functional rather than atmospheric, with a supermarket and 24-hour café nearby but little else of note. This is not a base for walkable sightseeing.

The Rooms

Two configurations: king bed or two queens, both at a generous 355 sq ft (33 m²). Each room has air conditioning, a mini fridge, a desk, and free Wi-Fi. Microwaves are available on request from reception. Room quality, however, is inconsistent — some guests report clean, well-kept spaces; others have encountered smoke odours, stained carpets, and damaged furnishings. The property is overdue a renovation.

Facilities & Service

No breakfast. The 24-hour front desk is a genuine asset, with friendly, hospitable staff being the motel’s most consistently praised quality. Free parking, luggage storage, and a business centre round out the basics.

Pros & Cons

✔ Free parking — rare in LA
✔ Strong freeway access across greater LA
✔ Spacious rooms at budget rates
✔ Warm, family-run hospitality and 24-hour front desk

✘ Room quality is inconsistent — request a recently refreshed unit
✘ Dated interiors in need of renovation
✘ No breakfast
✘ Poor for transit-dependent or walkable sightseeing

Overall

Kings Lodge does one thing well: it gives budget drivers a spacious, affordable room with solid freeway access, staffed by genuinely warm people. The inconsistent room condition is a real caveat — but if you get a decent unit, it’s a sensible and affordable LA base.
