K.P. Grand Hotel

K.P. Grand Hotel, Chanthaburi: A High-Rise Landmark in Thailand’s Gem Capital

K.P. Grand Hotel is Chanthaburi’s tallest and most established hotel — a 202-room property that has been the city’s premier address for business and leisure travelers for many years.

The location is hard to fault: the gem market, Robinson Department Store, and the Chanthaburi Gem and Jewelry Center are all within walking distance, and the views from the upper floors over the city and the surrounding hills are the best available in town. The hotel is showing its age in places, but the facilities remain the most comprehensive in the area.

Location

Chanthaburi sits around two and a half hours east of Bangkok and is one of Southeast Asia’s most important gem trading centers — rubies, sapphires, and other precious stones are sold here in volume, particularly on weekends when the street gem market comes alive.

The hotel sits at the center of this activity, with the main gem trading area and the shopping mall within easy walking distance. Wat Bot Muang and the National Maritime Museum are both nearby, and the Chanthaburi River district — with its French cathedral and old town shophouses — is accessible by car.

Rooms

The 202 rooms and suites span standard configurations through to larger suites, all with air conditioning, flat-screen television, refrigerator, and free Wi-Fi. Rooms are dated in decor and some are showing wear, but the basics are in order and the upper floors deliver views that justify the stay on their own. Request the highest available floor — the city panorama stretching toward Khao Soi Dao is the hotel’s most distinctive feature and changes character entirely at night.

Lifts serve the upper floors, though in an older building of this height it is worth knowing that a lift outage means a long climb.

Food and Drink

The dining offering has contracted since the hotel’s peak years. The buffet breakfast is no longer available — a set breakfast is served at a modest price, which covers the basics adequately. The rooftop Sky Room restaurant on the 18th floor, which once served European cuisine with city views and live piano, is currently closed.

The Coffee Shop on the first floor handles Thai, international, and local Chanthaburi dishes; Mei San serves Chinese cuisine; and the Lobby Bar covers drinks and snacks.

The beer garden at the front of the hotel runs from late afternoon to midnight with live music and fresh seafood — a genuine draw, and one of the better evening options in the city. The Friday seafood buffet, when running, is well-regarded and popular locally.

The streets around the hotel have plenty of alternatives, including an Indian restaurant directly across the road, local food stalls, and Central Chanthaburi a short walk away.

Facilities and Service

The hotel has a swimming pool, gym, sauna, traditional Thai massage, karaoke rooms, a gem and jewelry shop in the hotel plaza, a souvenir shop, 24-hour front desk, and parking for over 500 vehicles.

Free breakfast is included in some rates. Room service availability has become limited — the kitchen’s current offering is reduced, and requests outside the standard menu may not be fulfilled from the hotel’s own kitchen.

Staff are courteous and the hotel maintains a warm atmosphere despite operating at reduced capacity compared to its pre-pandemic peak.

✔ Unbeatable location for the gem market and town center
✔ Beer garden with live music and fresh seafood
✔ Swimming pool, gym, sauna, and Thai massage on site
✔ Over 500 parking spaces
✔ Friendly staff and good value room rates

✘ Hotel is showing its age — rooms are dated and some areas feel tired

✘ Room service is limited
✘ No in-room toiletries reported in some rooms — worth confirming at booking
✘ Lift reliability in an older high-rise is a practical consideration

Overall

K.P. Grand remains the most complete option in Chanthaburi and the only one that puts you this high above the city. The views, the location for the gem market, and the beer garden in the evening are reason enough to stay. Book an upper floor, confirm what is currently included in the room rate, and bring any toiletries you need just in case.
