Lodge Monte do Sobral sits in the rolling countryside outside Alcáçovas, in the heart of the Alentejo, and carries a history that sets it apart from any other rural lodge in Portugal. It was in the barn on this hill that the April Captains first met in secret to plan the Carnation Revolution of 1974 — the uprising that ended decades of dictatorship and changed the course of the country.
The current owners, a French couple who left southern France in search of something different, discovered the property, fell in love with it, and carried out a thorough renovation in 2019 with care for both the building and its past. The result is a quietly special place.
Location
The lodge is located near Alcáçovas in Évora District, in genuinely rural Alentejo — open plains, cork oaks, and near silence. Évora, with its Roman temple, Chapel of Bones, and medieval cathedral, is around 37 km away. Beja Airport is 62 km distant.
This is a place to come to be somewhere, not a base for daily excursions. The landscape is the point, and the lodge is best appreciated by those who find that sufficient.
Rooms
The lodge has 16 rooms and suites across five room categories plus a duplex loft, accommodating up to 32 guests. Each is individually decorated in a warm, comfortable style — no two are the same, and all have been fully renovated while retaining the character of the original building. Rooms are independent of one another, offering a degree of privacy more akin to a collection of cottages than a conventional hotel. Wi-Fi is free throughout.
One practical note: the rural setting means insects, including ants, are an occasional presence. This is the nature of campo living rather than a failing of the property.
Food and Drink
There is no on-site restaurant, but breakfast is served daily — simple, well-regarded, and with a distinctly French sensibility reflecting the owners’ origins. For lunch and dinner, the lodge works with local partner restaurants and a catering company for private events. If you are staying for a few days, it is worth identifying nearby dining options before arrival.
Facilities and Service
The lodge has two event spaces: a large room accommodating up to 250 people and a smaller room for around 50, the latter with a covered terrace overlooking the garden and pool. Both are equipped with electrical and USB connections and a bar, making the property a capable venue for weddings, family gatherings, birthdays, and seminars. A catering partner handles food for private events.
Beyond the event spaces, facilities include a seasonal outdoor swimming pool, garden, terrace, snack bar, and free private parking. Animals are welcome.
The owner, Anika, is the property’s most consistent asset — warm, flexible, and genuinely attentive. Late check-ins and post-checkout pool access have been accommodated without fuss, and the atmosphere throughout is personal.
