Mutrah Hotel, Muscat: Oman’s Oldest Hotel in the Heart of the Capital
The oldest hotel in the Sultanate of Oman, Mutrah Hotel has been welcoming guests since 1970. Now operating under the management of Abdulrahman and Sons, it sits in the Mutrah district of Muscat — one of the city’s most historically rich and walkable neighbourhoods.
With decades of experience behind it and a long-standing reputation for value, it remains a dependable budget-friendly base for travellers visiting Oman’s capital.
Location
Mutrah places you well within reach of the city’s most rewarding sights. The Mutrah Corniche, Mutrah Souq, and Mutrah Fort are all within a 10–15 minute walk. A bus station serving the airport is also accessible on foot, and ample free parking is available on site for those arriving by car.
Popular dining options — including Royal House Restaurant, La Brasserie, and Courtyard — are close by, along with local eateries and supermarkets. Sultan’s Armed Forces Museum is within walking distance.
One practical note: the souk and corniche are walkable in around 30 minutes, or a short taxi ride if you prefer.
Rooms
A range of budget single and deluxe rooms is available. Rooms are spacious by the standards of the price point and are cleaned daily.
All rooms include a flat-screen TV, minibar, and kitchenette. Free WiFi is available throughout the property, and a complimentary water bottle is replenished in the room each day.
The rooms and bathrooms show their age — fixtures and fittings are older, and bathrooms in particular could benefit from refurbishment. Air conditioning units are functional if dated.
Restaurant & Bar
The hotel includes one in-house restaurant and two bars, offering good value and reasonably priced options. A free breakfast is included and features a solid variety of local and international dishes — nutritious and enjoyable, if not lavish. Breakfast can also be taken in-room.
The restaurant is worth trying for Indian food in particular. Numerous additional dining options are available in the surrounding neighbourhood.
One gap: there is no complimentary tea or coffee provision in the rooms.
Facilities & Service
Free private parking on site. 24-hour front desk, 24-hour check-in, concierge, and bellman service available at all hours. Baggage assistance is provided on arrival and departure.
Languages spoken include English and Arabic. Staff are friendly and helpful.
